August 2010 Golfers gathered at Discovery Bay Golf Club Saturday August 21st under sunny skies and perfect conditions for the Soroptimist Twelfth Annual Scramble for Service. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies were presented in each of three divisions. Division A First Place with a score of 57: Gabe Tonon, Scott Nelson, Chris Holloway, Ronnie Harrell Division A-1 High School Division with a score of 57: Chimicum High School's Eric Nelson, Mason Moug, Adam Barrows, Erin Nutter Division B First Place with a score of 65: Todd Carlson, Rich Boyd, Dick Lynn, Jerry Spiekerman The day's golf was capped with refreshments during the award ceremony and a raffle with over 30 prizes. Funds raised by the tournament are focused on the Soroptimist mission of improving the lives of women and girls in local communities and around the world. Internationally there are over 3000 clubs in every part of the world, all working in various ways to assist women and girls in education, self sufficiency, and in improving human rights. Divided into Federations of the Americas, Europe, Southwest Pacific and Great Britain/Ireland, projects spearheaded by the organization reach poverty stricken families in Africa and Asia and other underdeveloped countries as well as fighting human trafficking and domestic violence at home and abroad. SI Port Townsend/East Jefferson County has channeled funds from previous golf tournaments into local projects such as:
Annually presenting scholarships and monetary awards to single mothers attempting to further their education and improve the lives of their families. The local Port Townsend/East Jefferson County chapter is made up of professional women from all walks of life with a diverse backgrounds. They meet every Thursday at noon at Discovery View apartments in Port Townsend and welcome inquiries.
